George Robert Crabtree, 90, of Corbin, Kentucky, passed away on Sunday, November 16, 2014, at The Hospice Compassionate Care Center in Richmond, Kentucky.
Born in Harlan County, Kentucky, he was the son of the late Joshua Taylor and Lotus Crabtree.
George graduated from Corbin High School, and was a WWII veteran, having served in the Navy in both the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters. He also received training as a precursor to the Seals prior to the end of WWII, and was honorably discharged in 1946.
George was employed by the Pepsi-Cola Bottling Company in Corbin and retired in 1988.
In his younger years, George enjoyed participating in sports, farming and raising cattle. He also enjoyed gardening, hiking, reading, and loved Corbin, UK, and Cincinnati sporting events.
He was a faithful and longtime member of the Trinity United Methodist Church of Corbin, where he served as a trustee and a chair and member of various committees.
George is survived by one brother, Jack Crabtree (Helen); daughter I. Kaye Black (Brad); two sons, Richard (Rick) Peace (Esther), and Rodger (Dean) Peace (Carolyn); seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife Naomi, his brothers Leonard, Josh who was killed in action in WWII, and Billy who died in infancy.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 P.M. on Thursday, November 20, 2014, at Vankirk-Grisell Funeral Home in Corbin with Pastor Jeff Frost presiding. Burial will follow at Rest Haven Cemetery in Corbin.
Visitation will be from 6-9 P.M. on Wednesday, Nov. 19, at Vankirk-Grisell Funeral Home.
One of George's passions was doing the landscaping at his church, so in lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Landscape Fund of the Trinity United Methodist Church, PO Box 1174, Corbin, KY 40702.
