Allen Ray '"Skeeter"' Stephens

Allen Ray "Skeeter" Stephens, 85, of Corbin, passed away Saturday, May 23, 2015 at Continue Care Hospital in Corbin.
Allen was born May 3, 1930 in Corbin to the late J.W. "Skeeter" and Mary Root Stephens. He was also preceded in death by infant triplet brothers, Ronnie, Randy, and Ralph Stephens.
Allen graduated from Corbin High School in 1948 and then served one year active service, from 1948-1949 in the United States Air Force and six years in the reserves. He entered the Hugh Harris Masonic Lodge F&AM on August 3, 1951 and received a Lifetime pin. He received the designation of Kentucky Colonel in 1996. Allen was married to Peggie Jean Singley on June 21, 1952 at First United Methodist Church of Corbin by Rev. Ralph Wesley.
Allen retired from CSX Railroad in 1986 after 38 years of service. He began his career with L&N Railroad as a Machinist Apprentice and was promoted to various supervisory positions ending his career as General Locomotive Foreman. He also traveled for the company throughout his career investigating wrecks and teaching air brake system repair.
Allen was a talented musician who played piano, guitar and ukulele. He also was a gifted vocalist, singing solos throughout the years at many weddings and funerals as well as with several choirs and vocal groups. He was a member of First United Methodist Church. Allen was also an avid golfer and enjoyed playing tennis. After retirement, his biggest enjoyment was spending time with his family and friends.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Ralph Stephens and wife Debbie of Jacksonville, FL and daughter Alisa Stephens Williams of Owasso, OK. He is also survived by grandsons Derrick Stephens and wife Kelly of Southern Pines, NC, Nic Stephens of Jacksonville, FL and granddaughter Brooke Stephens of Jacksonville, FL; two sisters, Gerry Stephens McGee and husband John McGee of Lexington and Margie Stephens of Lexington.
Visitation will be held at Vankirk-Grisell Funeral Home on Tuesday, May 26 from 6 to 8 PM and the funeral will be held Wednesday, May 27 at 1 PM with visitation an hour before. Rev. Bobby Joe Eaton will officiate. Pallbearers will be family and friends. In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to the Corbin Senior Citizens Center, Barbourville Street, Corbin, KY 40701
