Dennis Doyle Brewer, 88, of Corbin, passed away on Sunday, June 5, 2016, at the home of his daughter surrounded by family.
Born in Laurel County, he was the son of the late Charles N. and Margaret F. Chesnut Brewer. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by daughter Rebecca "Becky" Topolsky; sisters Kathleen Mae Brewer and Carmen Rose Brewer; brothers Maurice Eugene Brewer and Charles Donald Brewer; and nephew Donnie Brewer.
Dennis was a U.S. Army veteran serving in WWII and Korea. He was a faithful member, past treasurer and trustee of the Trinity United Methodist Church. He had been active in United Methodist Men and district activities which allowed him to fellowship with members of other area churches.
He was retired from the U.S. Postal Service. Beginning his career as a mail sorter on mail trucks and later trains, he advanced to mail clerk, and later served as financial officer and ultimately Postmaster of the London Post Office. After retiring from the postal service, he was a seasonal tax preparer for Marr, Miller, and Myers CPAs.
Always serving his community, Dennis was a longtime member of the Kiwanis Club of Corbin where he was president twice, secretary, past Lieutenant Governor, and was instrumental in starting the Williamsburg Kiwanis Club. He also served on the Kiwanis Cemetery Committee at Pine Hill Cemetery, was a board member of Corbin Senior Citizens, and operated his own greenhouse.
He is survived by his loving wife of over 63 years Thelma Scalf Brewer; daughter Denise Brewer Lanham (Randy); grandchildren: Kris Hubbard (Gypsy), Anna Langdon (Norm), Desi Lanham (Jerell), Colton Lanham (Natalie), and Crimson Duval (George); and by 15 great-grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, June 9, 2016 at the Vankirk-Grisell Funeral Home with Rev. Jeff Frost and Rev. Chris Jasper officiating. Burial will follow in the Cumberland Memorial Gardens with military honors by American Legion Post 88.
The family will receive friends from 6:00-9:00 P.M. Wednesday at the funeral home.
