Edwin L. Smith, 89, of Eustis, Florida and Corbin, Kentucky, went to be with the Lord Tuesday morning, October 25, 2011, at his home.
He was born in Tekoa, Washington, and grew up on a dairy farm. He was a graduate of Lynn Camp High School, and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a member of Good Hope Baptist Church and was retired from the coal business. He was a brilliant business man and mentored many people with his knowledge and advice, including his family. He was always willing to share with others less fortunate.
Ed was a longtime bank director, former CEO and Chairman of the Board, and real estate appraiser of Community Trust Bank, formerly known as Farmers National Bank of Williamsburg.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Rufus and Verdie Smith; his wife of 56 years, Betty Ward Smith; brothers, Elvin and A.E. "Gene" Smith; and sister, Velda Smith.
He is survived by a daughter, Donna L. Masters and husband Gary of Corbin; son, Dr. David E. Smith and wife, Lorry, of Nicholasville; three grandchildren: Andrew Joseph Edwin Smith of Lexington, Kentucky, Maxwell David Smith of Georgetown, Kentucky, and Emily Alida Smith of Nicholasville, Kentucky; brother, Carl Smith and wife Iona of Corbin; sister-in-law, Shirley Smith of London; special aunt, Lela Norvell Brooks; and special friend and caregiver, Frances Steely; several nieces and nephews; and many special friends to mourn his passing.
Pallbearers will be : Andy Smith, Max Smith, Clyde Burchette, J. Robert Stansbury, Dr. Phillip Henderlight, John Bill Gibbs, Bobby Hendrickson, Fred Channel, Dallas Steely, David Myers, Lanny Myers and Bill Martin.
Honorary Pallbearers will be : Jim Lunsford, Joe Stanford, Bobby Nelson, Randall Smith, Steve Kersey, Carmack Kersey, Henry Martin, David Huff, George Humfleet, Ralph Gosser, Dan Rawlings, and Michael Valentine.
Visitation will be Friday, October 28, from 6-9 pm at Vankirk-Grisell Funeral Home, and Saturday, October 29, from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm at Good Hope Baptist Church. A celebration of his life will be at 1:00 pm at Good Hope Baptist Church with Rev. Darvin Wells, Rev. Doyle Lester, Rev. Robert Lockhart, and grandson, Max Smith officiating. Burial will be at the Ohler Addition of the Lynn Camp Cemetery with military graveside honors by American Legion Post 88.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Good Hope Baptist Church, 16th & Elm Street, Corbin or Lynn Camp Cemetery Fund, c/o Jamie Norvell, 113 N. Main Street Suite 1, Corbin. The family would like to say a special thanks to his dedicated friend, Jim Lunsford, for the many trips taking him to the doctor in Lexington and daily calls and visits.
