Eldred J. Von Gruenigen

Eldred J. Von Gruenigen, 94, of Corbin, KY departed this life on Sunday, July 4, 2021 in the Jean Waddle Care Center at Somerset, KY. Eldred was born on March 17, 1927 in Corbin, the first child of the late Karl and Ada Gieszl Von Gruenigen. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, a retired electrician for the CSX Railroad, and a lifetime member of the First Christian Church. Eldred was very patriotic and had a servant's heart. He was much loved and respected by his family and friends. In addition to his parents, Eldred was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Maxine Taylor Von Gruenigen, and his five younger siblings: Fred and Rodney "Pudge" Von Gruenigen, Marian Johnson, Janet Johnson, and Carolyn Walker. Survivors include a son Eddie Von Gruenigen and wife Rita of Jamestown, KY; two grandsons: Casey and Holly Von Gruenigen of Jamestown, and Chad and Jennifer Von Gruenigen of Lawrenceburg, KY; two great granddaughters, Ella and Leah Von Gruenigen; a sister-in-law Wylene Jones and her daughter Susan. Eldred's visitation will begin at 1 pm Thursday, July 8 at the Vankirk-Grisell Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow there at 2 pm with Rev. Ronnie Mitchell and Rev. Paul Sims officiating. Burial will be at Pine Hill Cemetery with military honors by the American Legion Post 88 Honor Guard. Memorials are suggested for the care of Pine Hill Cemetery and can be mailed to: Kiwanis Cemetery Fund, P.O. Box 12, Corbin, KY 40702.
