Ernest Estil Johnson, 86, of Corbin, passed away on Tuesday, May 5, 2009, at his residence.
Born in Corbin, he was the son of the late Roland Johnson and Tena Stansbury Johnson. He was a switchman for L&N Railroad, was a member of Dorthae Pentecostal Church, and was a WWII veteran serving in the Army Air Corps, having served in Normandy, Northern Europe, Rhineland, Central Europe, Ardennes, and the Air Offensive in Europe. He was a recipient of the EAME Theater ribbon with six Bronze Stars.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Roland, Raymond, George and Ira Johnson; and three sisters, Eula Gibson, Verna Clark, and Edie Jones.
He is survived by his wife, Josephine Johnson of Corbin; three sons, Robert Johnson and wife Jeannie of Corbin, Glen Johnson and wife Connie of Nicholasville, and Ronald Johnson and wife Carolyn of Corbin; six grandchildren, Christie VanNorstran, Heather Michelle Johnson, Rebecca Engle, Kimberly Clark, Pamela Taylor and Terry Dean Fields; nine great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Lorene Hodge.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 am Thursday, May 7, at Vankirk-Grisell Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Felts Chapel Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6-9 pm Wednesday at Vankirk-Grisell Funeral Home.
