On October 18, 2016, Retired MSG Dorsal "Gene" Nunn, of Kettle Island, Kentucky, won his battle with cancer! He did not succumb to the cancer that tried to attack his body.
Gene served 21 years in the U.S Army where he received numerous awards including a Bronze Star. He served in Korea and two tours in Vietnam. During his career, he also earned the Army Commodation Medal (5th award) Good Conduct Medal (5th award) several Vietnam campaign medals and personal commodations too numerous to mention. Other duty stations, included Alaska and Germany where he served as NCOIC of numerous award winning dining facilities. His service to his country also required him to be away from his family over the span of his career.
He is a Kentucky Colonel, on the American Legion Roll of Honor as well as a Lifetime Member of the VFW. He retired in November 1980.
After his military retirement, he retired a second time from the United States Postal Service on July 31, 2004. During his twenty year employment, he worked in Middlesboro, Corbin, Harlan, and lastly Pineville Post Offices. He retired with the knowledge and pride having given an outstanding performance.
Gene always went above and beyond to help others. He was quick witted, full of laughter and loved pranks especially on April Fool's Day. He was generous with his time. He was an outstanding citizen, husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle.
Left to carry on his legacy are his wife, Lana Sue (Widener) Nunn, of Kettle Island, his daughters, Shelia Nunn (Middlesboro) and Vickie L Nunn Cadle (Tom) (Lexington) and honorary son, Clifford Saylor (South Carolina); his grandchildren: Aaron Eddy, Dani Partin, and Jessica Cadle; his great grandchildren Katrina, Keagan and Kylee Nunn, TJ Partin, Ava and Elle Eddy, and Ean Seabolt. His siblings, Katherine Engle (Corbin) Lawrence Nunn (Ohio) Eva Alsip (Corbin) Bessie Thompson (Jackson, Tn) Gwen Engle (Pineville) Darlene Nunn (Elizabethtown) and Eddie Nunn ( Somerset) , Special friend, Joe Newton (Radcliff).
Services will be at 2:00 PM Saturday at the Arnett & Steele Funeral Home Chapel with The Rev. Vernon Willard presiding.
Burial will be Tuesday, October 25, 2016 at 1:00 PM at the KY Veteran's Cemetery at Fort Knox, KY with full military honors.
Pall bearers will be his nieces, per his request: Gail Bleh, Becky Ferguson, Judy Taylor, Mona Jacobs, Karen Miller, Kim Thompson, Rose Hoskins and Barbara Brock. Honorary pall bearers include his son-in-law, Tom Cadle, Billy Philpot, Jimbo Philpot, Donny Miller, Clifford Saylor, and Leeroy Burnette
His family would like to express thanks and gratitude to Dr. Efren Valencia, Dr. Neil Barry, Dr. Brent Terrell, Dr. Svetich, and Dr. Firas Badin and all nurses, and staff who provided care. We appreciate you so much!
The family will receive friends from 6 until 9 PM Friday at the Arnett & Steele Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Pineville, which is honored to serve the Nunn Family.
