Harry King Shepherd

Harry King Shepherd, age 79, of Corbin, Kentucky, passed away on Wednesday December 14, 2022, at his home.

Born on June 11, 1943, in Harlan, Kentucky, he was a son of the late Arbin Shepherd and Dora Scott Shepherd.  Harry graduated in 1961 from Hall High School before going to work in the coal mines.  In 1967, he was drafted into the Army where he served in Vietnam in the 1st, 5th, and 25th infantry.  He was honorably discharged in 1969 after receiving one Purple Heart and two Silver Stars.

After leaving the Army, Harry returned to the coal mines where he worked until he retired from Mary Helen mine.  He was a lifetime member of both the DAV and the VFW.  In Corbin, Kentucky he was a past Commander of VFW Post 1410 where he was active with their military graveside honor guard.  In addition to serving his fellow veterans, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and hosting family gatherings.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Joanna Hall Shepherd, and by his siblings, Ada Jane Leath and Carson Shepherd.

Harry is survived by his son, Jimmy Shepherd (Whitney), grandchildren, Lauren Shepherd, Joanna Shepherd, Ethena Shepherd, Minerva Shepherd, and Lincoln Shepherd, siblings, Elsie Burkhart, Bernice Bearden, Rosella Shepherd, Drucilla "City" Noe, Joey "Joy" York, Arbin "Shep" Shepherd, Sandra Shepherd, and Dorene Smith, special brother in laws, Roger Hall and Ron Decker, special sister in law, Josie Shepherd, and by many other family and friends including special niece Scarlet Kirby (Steven).

A graveside service with military honors will be held at 2pm on Tuesday December 20, 2022 at the cemetery chapel of Rest Haven Cemetery in Loyal, KY.
