Hershel Taylor

Hershel Taylor, age 88, of Corbin, passed away Friday, March 1, 2019 at the UK Hospital in Lexington.
He was the owner of Taylor Cabinet Shop for 66 years. Hershel was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and former deacon of Poplar Grove Baptist Church.  During his active years at church, he attended Sunday School every Sunday for 50 consecutive years.  He was a lifetime member of Cumberland Valley Lodge #751 F&AM at Gray and a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War.
Hershel was a master carpenter and spent his life working in a vocation which he loved.  His hobbies included reading the Bible, playing guitar, banjo and singing, writing songs, playing rummy and never failing to have a joke to make others laugh.
He was preceded in death by his parents Elmer and Nellie Taylor, his daughter Vikki Hood and grandson Donnie Hood, and his brother Jack Taylor, all of Corbin; a sister Yvonne Harris and husband Paul of Indiana.
Hershel leaves behind his wife of 36 years, Oshia Stivers Taylor of Corbin; one brother, Harry Taylor and wife Roberta of Butler, KY; one stepson, David Stivers and wife Lynn, and their son Jonathan Stivers of Corbin;  one stepdaughter, Debbie Phillips and husband Grant of London.  He also leaves a host of other family and friends to mourn his passing.
Visitation will be from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 6 at Vankirk-Grisell Funeral Home.  Masonic rites will be conducted at 7:15pm by Cumberland Valley Masonic Lodge #751
Hershel's funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 7 at the funeral home, with Rev. Kevin Roach of Calvary Baptist Church officiating.  Burial will follow at Rest Haven Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Darvin Neil, Johnny Woods, Rick Moore, Mike Saunders, Russell Helton, Glenn Tompkins, and Jonathan Stivers.
Honorary pallbearers are "all of my friends who Jesus gave me over the years and you know who you are."
