James J. Rose, 90, of Corbin passed away Friday, June 29, 2012 at Hillcrest Nursing Home.
Jim was born in Knox County, KY, a son of the late Tom and Daisy Hood Rose. He graduated from Lynn Camp High School and served in the U.S. Army in the South Pacific from the beginning of World War II.
He owned Cumberland Valley Adjustment Service in Harlan while living there, and returned to Corbin where he worked 40 years as an engineer for the L&N/CSX Railroad. Jim belonged to First Christian Church, the Hugh Harris Lodge #938 F&AM as a 32nd degree Mason, and Oleika Shrine Temple. He was a former volunteer deputy sheriff in Knox County, and was faithful to visit friends and railroad retirees and their widows in local nursing homes.
He is survived by his loving wife, Sylvia Jones Rose to whom he would have been married 62 years on July 1st; a sister, Pauline Martin of Corbin; a special niece, Vickie Myers and husband David of Corbin; nieces Dr. Patricia Calico, Judy Goins and Della Elliott; and nephews Jerry Treadway and Jimmy Goodin.
In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by a brother Tommy Rose, and sisters Cleo Treadway, Lucille Mayne, Jeanette Sears and Louise Baird.
Visitation will begin at 11am Monday at Vankirk-Grisell Funeral Home. Masonic rites will be conferred by Hugh Harris Lodge at 12:30pm.
Jim's funeral will follow at 1pm with Rev. Robert Lockhart and Rev. Jefferson Calico (Jim's great nephew) officiating.
Burial will be at Pine Hill Cemetery.
Memorials are suggested to First Christian Church.
