James Roy Ely, age 76, of Corbin, KY, passed away on Tuesday, January 3, 2023, at Saint Joseph London.
Born in Jonesville, VA, he was a son to the late James Ely and Byrtle Smith Ely. James was a selfless, hardworking, and loving man. He served his country in the United States Army. Following his military career, he worked for 30 years as a driver for UPS, where he retired. In addition to his service and work, he was a very social man with many friends. Whether it be golfing, playing music, or gathering for breakfast, James enjoyed his friends and cherished the memories they made. He was a gifted singer and often sang with his sisters. Faith and family are the two things James loved the most. He was a devoted member of Dorthae Pentecostal Church for over 45 years, and was married to his loving wife, Carolyn, for 54 years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Joanne Berry, Bernetta Jackson, and Lucille Pennington.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Martin Ely, son, Jeffrey Roy Ely, granddaughters, Channing Price and husband Jordan, and Jocie Hamblin and husband Isaiah, a great great niece who he cared for as a daughter, Piper Volter, great grandchildren, Madden Hamblin and Joplin Price, sister, Linda Ely Baker, and by many friends.
Visitation will be held from 12-2pm on Saturday, January 7, 2023, at Vankirk-Grisell Funeral Home, where his funeral service will follow at 2pm with Rev. Billy Evans and Rev. Jeff Lewis officiating.
Burial will follow at Worley Cemetery in Corbin, Kentucky with military honors by Keavy D.A.V.
