James Thomas Bernardo, age 83, of Corbin, passed away on Tuesday, August 19, 2008, at the Heritage.
He was born in Gary, WV to the late Angelo and Jane Walker Bernardo. James was a United States Marine Corp veteran of World War II having participated in the invasions of Iwo Jima, Siapan, and Tinian. He was a recipiant of the Bronze Star. He graduated from Eastern Kentucky University with a BA in 1949. James worked for US Steel for 27 years before becoming a Safety Specialist with the Mine Saftey and Health Administration before retiring.
In addition to his Parents, he was preceded in death by two Sisters, Josephine Loflin and Eukie Court.
James is survived by his Wife of 54 years, Wilma Bernardo whom he married on October 17, 1953; three Sons, James Thomas Bernardo Jr. of Cumberland, KY, John Angelo Bernardo and wife Alesia of Corbin, and Robert Walker Bernardo and wife Anita of Hebron, KY; five Grandchildren, Brian, Alex, Ross, Tony, and Katie Bernardo; Several Nieces and Nephews.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11am on Saturday, August 23, 2008, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Corbin. Burial will follow in St. Boniface Catholic Church Cemetery in Jellico, TN with Military honors by VFW Post #1410 of Corbin.
Visitation will be from 6-9pm on Friday at the Vankirk-Grisell Funeral Home, with Rosary Devotions at 8:30pm.
