Martha Shelton Cox, age 92, of Corbin, passed away on Wednesday, July 4, 2012, at her home with her daughters by her side.
Mrs. Cox was born April 3, 1920, at Jarvis Store, Kentucky, to William Shelton and Bernice Spurlock Shelton England. She was preceded in death by her husband Fred Cox, brothers Bright, Iliff, and Marcum Shelton, and sisters Mary Shelton Gambrel and Lucy Shelton as well as her parents.
Mrs. Cox is survived by her daughter, Freda Simpson and husband Bob and Brenda Greer and husband Kerry, all of Corbin; grandchildren Kelly Robert Simpson and wife Amy, Sarah Catherine Pietrowski and husband Paul, Chad Thomas Greer and wife Fawn, all of Corbin, and Megan Melinda Senters and husband Brian of Gray; great-grandchildren Dustin, Sydney, and Logan Simpson, Ivy and River Greer, and Kai Senters; sister-in-law, Lucy Cox Shelton; brothers-in-law George Cox and Bill Cox and wife Joan, all of Corbin; lifelong friends, Clarence and Ethel Eastridge of Leesburg, Florida; and many nieces and nephews who were precious to her.
Fred and Martha, as they were known to all, were married on Christmas Eve, 1939, and at the time of his passing in 2010, they had celebrated over seventy years together. Partners in business as well as in life, they first owned and operated the Diary Delle Drive In and then West Knox Hardware until their retirement in 1984. Martha had been an active member of Piney Grove Baptist Church for over fifty years. She stayed busy after retirement caring for her family and friends, gardening, and sewing.
Pallbearers will be Kelly Simpson, Paul Pietrowski, Chad Greer, Brian Senters, Darin Cox and Aaron Borden.
Visitation will be from 12 Noon Saturday, July 7, at Vankirk-Grisell Funeral Home until the hour of the funeral at 2pm with Rev. Ralph Rogers officiating. Burial will be in Cumberland Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested to Piney Grove Baptist Church, PO Box 1563, Corbin, KY 40702-1563.
