Neal Odean Mays

December 30, 1936 — April 8, 2025

Neal Odean Mays, age 88, passed away peacefully at home on April 8, 2025, surrounded by his family. On December 30, 1936 in Barbourville, KY, Neal became the firstborn son of Walter and Creesa Mays, living a long life marked by quiet strength with a love for learning and creativity.

As a devoted husband of 69 years to Doris Mays, Neal was the heart of a family who cherished his steady presence and gentle spirit as much as his wit and ever-present humor. He was a proud father to Sandra Bilton and James Mays, a treasured grandfather to Alia Sand, Mitra Gripshover, Shayda Moradian, and Cody Mays, and a great-grandfather to four great-grandchildren; each of whom brought him immense pride and delight.

Neal dedicated his professional life to education, working as a teacher in the Cincinnati Public School system. His passion for teaching extended far beyond the classroom through a commitment to lifelong learning and fondness for sharing knowledge in all areas of his life.

He was also an honored member of The Masons, a fraternal organization founded on the principles of brotherhood, charity, integrity, and the pursuit of moral and spiritual growth.

Outside of his professional and fraternal commitments, Neal was a man of many interests. He was a skilled woodworker, a tender gardener, and enjoyed fishing with his son. He also had an enduring passion for photography and videography, capturing moments both ordinary and extraordinary. He was also a proud ham radio enthusiast, finding connection and community through the airwaves.

Scripture tells us in Proverbs 20:7, “The righteous man leads a blameless life; blessed are his children after him.” Neal fulfilled the Biblical example of righteous living with his quiet and calm spirit, content in life by a deep love for his family and devotion to his friends and neighbors. His legacy is one of love, learning, quiet leadership, tender guidance, unwavering values, and the enviable ability to find the beauty in all things. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered in the hearts of those whose lives he touched.

A private graveside service will begin at 2 pm on Sunday, April 13, 2025, at Brafford Cemetery, Arkle Rd, Gray, KY.
