Reuben L. Cummins, 90, of Corbin passed away Friday, August 21, 2015 at the Corbin Nursing Home.
A Corbin native, Reuben was a son of the late Milton J. and Ruth Kitchen Cummins. He was preceded in death by all of his siblings - sisters Jennie Frances Swain and Edna Ruth "Babe" Peace Mangione, and brothers Rudyard, Edward, Cassius, Alvin, and Warren Cummins and a niece Rosanna Peace.
Reuben served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and received a Navy Unit Commendation ribbon for helping support the seizure of Iwo Jima from the Japanese.
He was retired from the L&N/CSX Railroad where he had been a tonnage clerk.
The Cummins family moved to the edge of Laurel County around 1946 where they began gardening as a sideline to their regular jobs. After retirement, the brothers' work on their farm became their main endeavor to the benefit of themselves and their many friends.
Reuben is survived by nephews: William B. Peace and wife Malissa, Edward J. Cummins and wife Jelema, and William F. Swain; nieces: Nellie Cummins, Barbara Mello, and Anna Smith; great nephews: Christopher Smith and wife Delana, John Ed Scalf and wife Angela, Elliott Emerson Peace, Henry Willingham Peace, and Eric Mello; great nieces: Karen Scalf, Ellen Scalf, Susan Scalf, Elizabeth Pearl Kinney and husband Joe, Stephanie Henderson and husband Marc, and Tina Mello and husband Chris Darden; and 12 great-great nieces and nephews.
Visitation will begin at 12 noon on Tuesday, August 25 at the Vankirk-Grisell Funeral Home. Reuben's funeral will follow at 2pm with Rev. Tim Lowe officiating.
He will be buried at Corinth Cemetery with military honors by the American Legion Post 88 honor guard.
