Richard E. "Dick" Ambrose, 87, of Simpsonville, SC, and formerly of Corbin, passed away Friday, February 1, 201,3 at Greenville Memorial Hospital in Greenville, SC.
Born in Madison, WI, he was a son of the late William and Ella Johnson Ambrose. Dick was also preceded in death by the love of his life, Kathryn Klausen Ambrose, along with a brother and four sisters.
After graduating from Dixon High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps one day before his 18th birthday and fought in World War II before his discharge in May, 1946. He and Kathryn married Dec. 10, 1949. After working different jobs, he was hired by National Standard Co. in 1956 and was transferred to Corbin in 1962. He retired as production scheduling manager in 1987 but worked another 2 1/2 years.
Dick belonged to Grace on the Hill UMC, and was a Mason and Shriner. He enjoyed fishing, gardening and woodworking.
Survivors include two sons: Brian Ambrose of Simpsonville, SC and Tom Ambrose and wife Karen of Kenly, NC; a daughter, Diane Broughton and husband Joe of Ashland, KY; four grandchildren: Amanda Broughton, Kari Broughton, Rebekah Ambrose and Ryan Ambrose; two great grandchildren due any day, Wyatt and Knox; and a special pet "Marie" who kept him company for 10 years.
Visitation will begin at noon Tuesday at the Vankirk-Grisell Funeral Home. His funeral will follow at 2:00pm with Rev. Tim Thompson officiating.
Burial will be at Pine Hill Cemetery. Lifelong friend Bob Meeks will be an honorary pallbearer.
