Sgt-Maj Earl L. Hurley, age 91, Retired US Marine Corps, of Corbin, passed away Friday, July 2, 2004 at his residence.
The high point of his military career was guarding then President Franklin Roosevelt while in Warm Springs, Gerogia in November of 1935. During World War II, he worked with Colonel James Roosevelt with the Fourth Raiders Battalion. He went on to serve over 30 years in the Marine Corps retiring from the service on July 1, 1965. Generals remembered him as the "Old Breed." He was a life member of the VFW Post #1410 in Corbin, A life member of the American Legion in El Paso, TX, a life member of the DAV in Corbin, he was also a Kentucky Colonel and a New Mexico Colonel.
After his career in the Military, he worked as a Loan Manager for Interstate Securities.
He is survived by his former wife, Harriett Hurley of West Palm Beach, FL; Two Sons, Earl L. Hurley Jr. of Oyster Bay on Long Island, NY, and William Hurley of North Palm Beach, FL; Two Daughters, Harriett "Sissy" Bennet of Dunn, NC, and Lavina Barkus of West Palm Beach, FL; his Sister, Willo J. Jones of Brandon, FL, and a Step-Sister, Mildred Sloan of Corbin.
Funeral service will be held at 1pm on Monday, July 5, 2004 at the Vankirk-Grisell Funeral Home with Rev. John D. Burkhart officiating. Interment will follow in Pine Hill Cemetery in Corbin, with Graveside Military Honors by the VFW Post #1410 of Corbin.
Visitation will be from 11am until 1pm on Monday at the Vankirk-Grisell Funeral Home.
