Tip Edward Cobb Sr.

Tip Edward Cobb Sr., age 86, passed away on September 19, 2011, at the Hillcrest Nursing Home. He was born in Keavy, Kentucky to the late Huey and Anna Cobb. Tip graduated from Cumberland College in 1948, Lincoln Memorial University in 1950, and earned his masters degree from Eastern Kentucky University in 1952. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy from August 1943 to May 1946. While a student at Cumberland College, he met Helen Johnson and they were married July 19, 1949. Tip was mathematics teacher and basketball coach at Woodbine High School 1950-1951 and Rockholds High School 1951-1955. From 1955 until January 1986, he worked as field representative with the Social Security Administration. Since retirement, he has farmed raising Angus cattle. He is a member of Whitley County Cattlemen's Association, Kentucky Cattlemen's Association, Farm Bureau Board member, and the Masonic Lodge. Tip was Baptist by faith having attended West Corbin Baptist Church since early childhood. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Tip E. Cobb Jr.; brother, Walter B. Cobb; sister, Ruby Thompson; and brother, Vergil L. Cobb. He is survived by his loving family: wife, Helen; son, Rick and wife Elspeth; grandson, Justin Cobb and wife Jessica; granddaughter, Morgan Cobb; great-granddaughter, Daphne Cobb and soon to be her baby sister; sisters, Margaret Gibbs and husband Charlie and Opal Gibson; brother-in-law, Kenneth Johnson and wife Brenda; and several nieces and nephews, all who mourn his passing. Funeral service will be at 11am on Thursday, Sept. 22, at Vankirk-Grisell Funeral Home with Rev. Bobby Joe Eaton and Rev. Robert Goodin officiating. Burial will be in the McFarland Cemetery in West Corbin. The family will receive friends from 6-9 pm Wednesday, Sept. 21 at Vankirk-Grisell Funeral Home, 607 Master Street, Corbin, KY.
