William H. Onkst, 92, of Corbin passed away Thursday, February 6, 2014 at Baptist Health in Corbin.
A native of Sunshine in Harlan County, he served in the U.S. Army during World War II and later opened Mike's Drive-In. In 1957, he and his brother Harold moved their families to Corbin where they opened the Piggly-Wiggly Supermarket. They added a store in Middlesboro in 1971.
Bill had been a Director of Cumberland Valley National Bank in Corbin, and a faithful member of Central Baptist Church serving as a deacon, trustee, Sunday School teacher and 40-year choir member.
He was preceded in death by his parents Herschel and Agnes Adams Onkst, his wife Kathleen Parsons Onkst, a son Billy Onkst, a sister Irene Knight, and brothers Russell and Harold Onkst.
He is survived by two sons: Michael A. Onkst and Alan Onkst; four grandchildren: Katie Onkst, Alex Onkst, Anna Onkst, and Ryan Onkst and wife Autumn; four great grandchildren: Trista, Addison, Noah, and Elijah Onkst; several nieces and nephews; and some special people in his life: Bernie Onkst, Sheila Onkst, Margie and Luther Adkins, Ruth Dillon, Bobby Ward, Marie Thomas, Robert and Joyce Anderson, Billy B. and Sarah Hobbs, and Mickey, Victoria, and Catherine.
Bill's visitation will be 4 - 6pm Saturday at Vankirk-Grisell Funeral Home in Corbin. The funeral will follow at 6pm with Rev. Chad Fugitt officiating.
Burial will be at 11am Monday at Resthaven Cemetery in Harlan County.
